Article is a summary of the research and findings of a six-year investigation into the materials characterization of the daguerreotype in order to devise better strategies for the care of daguerreotypes based on their actual properties. This is the most comprehensive study of the daguerreotype to date and was carried out in the Materials Research Laboratory of the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania.
