Abstract
An illustration by a few examples of the results achieved in archaeogeophysical prospecting in Hungary during the past five years. The ages of the sites studied using geophysical tools range from palaeolithic times to the beginning of Hungarian history, and therefore, different types of structures were the targets of prospecting. The location of a prehistoric flint mine was discovered by resistivity measurements, the plan of a Roman fortress was determined by ground-penetrating radar and resistivity survey, and kilns of medieval semisubterranean dwellings were detected by magnetic method. The filtering procedure is very useful for interpretation: for magnetic measurements, the application of a high-pass filter is expedient; for resistivity, the smoothing filter, and in some special cases, the signal detection filter. Their application is also discussed. For archaeological purposes, productive and inexpensive methods of high resolution and shallow penetration are suitable. Theoretical and experimental data prove that radio frequency, radar, and electromagnetic profiling can meet these requirements better than the classical methods such as magnetics and resistivity.
