Abstract
During the late prehistoric age, roughly after 900 AD, crushed shell was added as temper for pottery manufactured along most of the river valleys of the Midwest and along portions of the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of North America. Explores firing strategies by measuring the degree of firing from sherds collected in southeast Missouri, where shell replaced quartz sand as the predominant temper.
