A type of microscope that uses soft x-rays (wavelengths of 20 to 40 angstroms), rather than light or electrons, allows for the examination of biological samples under conditions similar to their natural state at resolutions beyond the limit of the optical microscope. The four x-ray methods are compared: contact microscopy, imaging microscopy, scanning microscopy, and holography.
