Abstract
This is part II of a series of bibliographies covering literature on patinas. The variety and complexity of chemical composition of corrosion products found on zinc and brasses is as great as or greater than that found on copper and copper alloys, which were covered in part I. However, zinc and zinc alloy artifacts are not as ancient or as plentiful as those made of copper. The initial corrosion product seems to be zinc hydroxide, which then changes readily to other substances. A greater variety of products is known from the laboratory than from naturally occurring minerals. This suggests instability of zinc hydroxychlorides or zinc hydroxysulfates with respect to zinc hydroxycarbonates. This relationship may point to means for gaining insight regarding age/authenticity of zinc and brass objects. The materials that can form under natural conditions requires further investigation. Other topic requiring further investigation are (1) the extent of intergranular attack and whether it relates to the rate of corrosion; and (2) relationship of crystal structures to rate and conditions of patina formation. Modern instrumentation will facilitate future research in these areas. An author index for this supplement follows part III, which is contained in this same AATA volume.
