Abstract
Varnish applied repeatedly year after year to the wooden doors on the first floor of the Karanji Mansion in Mysore, India, hardened into a thick layer and darkened. This hid the intricate carving. This varnish layer was removed with a solution of sodium carbonate. The wood was then given a suitable preservative coating.
