Abstract
This bibliography presents abstracts of literature dealing with working techniques, forgeries, and history of ivory, bone, and horn objects. The compilers contend that an understanding of these topics, combined with careful scientific investigation, will contribute to the solution of art historical questions. A large number of references deal with carving and working techniques, and some include illustrations of carving tools. The problem of forgeries of ivory artifacts has generated a large literature. Topics other than forgeries include historical works dealing with individual objects; the natural history of the elephant, mammoth, and other animals used for ivory, horn, or bone; and important artists. The bibliography begins with a number of medieval references, but most date to the late 19th and 20th century. An author index follows the abstracts.
