Abstract
This bibliography covers literature dealing with artifacts and art objects made of ivory, horn, and bone. The term 'ivory' is sometimes used imprecisely. The compilers of the bibliography have followed the original authors. Literature dealing with the ambiguity of the term is cited. Under normal conditions, preservation, repair, storage, and display of ivory presents few problems. Authentication and dating presents greater difficulty. Examination of carving techniques and chemical dating techniques may help resolve these problems. Systematic study of changes in the amino acid distribution in collagen, in particular, holds great promise for providing analytical criteria for authentication of ivory and bone artifacts. Thus, references dealing with the structure and chemistry of collagen are included in this bibliography. A couple of ancient references and one medieval reference precede the main body of referenced material, which falls in the late 19th and 20th centuries. An author index follows the abstracts.
