Abstract
The literature on the application of nuclear activation techniques to art historical and archaeological studies up to 1971 is abstracted in this supplement. Two pages of introductory comments preceding the abstracts summarize the principles on which activation analysis is based, the different types of activation analysis, and advantages and disadvantages of activation analysis. Thermal neutron activation analysis is the most common activation technique used, primarily because of its sensitivity. Recent development of solid state Ge(Li) detectors coupled to multi channel analyzers enabled simultaneous determination of many elements from complex gamma spectra. The references are listed chronologically, beginning with 1953, the year when the first study appeared which was based on activation analysis applied to an art object. Among the various applications that appeared over the ensuing 18 years were source analysis of various archaeological materials and thermal neutron autoradiography of paintings and autoradiographic enhancement of early photographs. An author index follows the abstracts. E. V. Sayre, one of the compilers of this bibliography, was a key figure in the early development of neutron activation analysis.
