Abstract
A cream silk pile velvet with a yellow weft pattern and a phoenix design was recently presented to the Victoria and Albert Museum. The velvet bears a Latin inscription, suggesting that it might have heraldic origins. The silk fabric is Italian, probably 15th-century, and was most likely produced in Florence.
