Abstract
Soil coring and augering techniques permit archaeologists to see beneath the surface of unexcavated sites. The most common applications of these techniques are to questions of site discovery, site boundary definition, and stratigraphy. Less common is use of subsurface soil probes for functional discrimination of different categories of buried features. This study focuses on the latter problem, describing how soil augering can locate buried features on a large site in the southwestern United States, and sort these buried features into functional categories prior to their excavation.
