The <i>Tales of Japan</i> exhibition held at the New York Public Library included a number of valuable artifacts from the Spencer Collection. It travelled to the Portland Art Museum (Portland, Oregon, USA), the Suntory Museum of Art (Tokyo, Japan), the Kobe City Museum (Kobe, Japan) and the Kimbell Art Museum (Fort Worth, Texas, USA). A brief outline of arranging temporary exhibitions which explain cultural background and artistic significance is given and display demands are discussed. Objects are normally kept in storage; display should be rare and brief. The technique for properly handling paper and silk scrolls, environmental controls, and packing procedures are also discussed. Cooperation between museums or departments and conservators holds out the prospect of mutual benefit. -- AATA
