Silk can be weighted by immersing the silk yarns in a solution of tin salts prior to weaving. This process increases the body and drape of the fabric, but can also reduce the strength and abrasion resistance. Weakened yarns can tear, resulting in visible rips or fiber loss when cleaned. This type of damage cannot be attributed to improper dry cleaning procedures. -- AATA
