Abstract
Whatman no. 1 (chromatographic grade), permalife bond and permalife text were bleached with sodium hypochlorite and chloramine-t. The paper samples were then heat aged and tested strength, folding endurance, ph and degree of polymerization. Sodium hypochlorite was found to be less harmful than expected but more so than chloramine-t. Physical modifications affect folding endurance prior to chemical degradation. It is concluded that the tests were not completely accurate, and the results obtained on such very good papers as whatman and permalife may not apply to poorer grade papers. Paper samples were laminated with two issues and tested. One proved unsatisfactory during ageing tests and was discarded. The other had lower folding and tensile strength than unlaminated paper. The plastic film, Ultraphan HK (made in Germany) became brittle during the tests.
