Abstract
The disruptive formation of ettringite is thought to be a result of its reprecipitation from solubilized aluminate material in concrete. The mechanism by which expansion of the products relative to the reactants can exceed the available pore volume is described. A nearly exponential relationship between the degree of expansion and the content of gypsum applies once the available pore space is filled. The mechanism described differs significantly from others proposed. -- AATA
