A cinerary urn in the stone container was excavated in 1979 in Akishima city, Tokyo, and attributed to about the 9th century. The material of the container is sandstone and badly deteriorated, fragile and showing breakage. The repair procedure is as follows: (1) The friable stone was wrapped thoroughly with flannel strips and impregnated in a vacuum chamber with alkyl alkoxy silane as a consolidant. (2) The cracks were filled with epoxy resin of low viscosity. (3) The broken parts were glued together with epoxy resin mixed with Carplex (silicate powder commercially available as filler). Stainless steel bars reinforced the gluing of the heavy broken parts. (4) The missing parts were filled by a paste containing epoxy resin emulsion, stone powder and glass microballoon. -- AATA
