Abstract
Variations in the chemical composition of the output of a pottery manufacturing center in Sparta, Greece, were examined by neutron activation analysis. The concentrations of 18 elements in 82 samples of pottery and terracotta, ranging in dale from late Helladic to Hellenistic, were measured. Although all the sherds showed a general compositional resemblance, the similarity of sherds of the Lakonian style from the Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia was particularly close. Minor smooth variations were observed in the concentrations of several elements through the Archaic and Classical periods. The implications of these results for pottery provenance studies are discussed.
