The chemical changes occurring in iron antiquities after excavation have been found to be identical to those occurring during the oxidation of ferrous ions in the presence of chloride. It has been shown that these reactions can occur at relative humidities as low as 20%. The results enable suggestions to be made as to the likely effectiveness of various storage environments and washing methods for archaeological iron.
