Q-mode cluster analysis of nonquantitative data has been demonstrated on a set of ceramic samples (pottery) from an archaeological locality in egypt which had been analyzed by optical emission spectroscopy before it was classified. A similar procedure for classification of a large set of analyzed specimens which have been described by qualitative or semiquantitative characters, could be applied to the field of conservation and restoration of museum collections.
