Abstract
This is essentially a condensed version of the author's book Conservation standards for works of art in transit and on exhibition which has appeared in UNESCO's Museums and Monuments Series, No. 17 (see 19-152). In the form of a manual with a number of progressive how-to-do-it illustrations, it describes methods of packing twoand three-dimensional works of art for transport in travelling exhibitions. Consideration is given first to deterioration phenomena, storage of collections, and handling techniques. After considering packing and its problems, modes of transportation are discussed and evaluated. There is a special discussion on shock and vibration in transit, and a set of standards and guidelines are presented to ensure safer and more secure exhibitions.
