Abstract
Translation and commentary on a letter, dating to c. 1295 C.E., in which the head of a Byzantine scriptorium describes contemporary manuscript Vellum preparation techniques and problems. The use of an egg coating, which caused the ink to flake from the Vellum, is mentioned. A description of the preparation of Vellum leaves for bookmaking is provided.
