Abstract
In the Western Hemisphere the matting of paper works of art is popular because it not only provides protection and support but makes possible a standard size and format for a wide range of materials. It also provides a safe, connected surface for annotation. The designs and methods of construction presented are those currently used in the Library's Restoration Office. These conservation workshop notes were prepared as instructional material for new staff members and for outside group seminars. Instructions are given for making standard mats, sink mats, doublesized mats, polyester slings, and variations thereof.
