Painted wooden ceilings and furniture were widely used in the country churches of Hungary between the 17th-19th centuries. The usual raw material was Scotch fir, spruce, and larch; the paintwork was done by natural pigments and organic dyestuffs; glue, starch, egg and lime were used as binding media. The author discusses the most frequent types of losses and deterioration as well as their causes (high relative humidity, sharp fluctuations in it, insect pests, etc. ). The article suggests in what order restoration should take place and states the criteria a suitable conserving agent should meet. Finally examples are provided to show how to overcome further difficulties and intricacies in the restoration of boarded wooden ceilings. See also AATA 16-1237. -- AATA
