The pieces of wooden furniture found at Gordion in central Turkey are among the only nonEgyptian examples of Near Eastern furniture to have survived. Shortly after excavation in the late 1950's, the pieces were dewatered in alcohol and consolidated in a solution of paraffin wax. In 1982, the pieces were reconserved. The treatment of the boxwood Pagoda table -- the first piece retreated -- consisted of removal of wax by solvent extraction under a vacuum, vacuum impregnation of the lower portion with poly(vinyl butyral) in an ethanol/ toluene mixture and drip-feeding of the table top with a thermosetting epoxy resin, rejoining the parts, and construction of a support and display case.
