Abstract
For the conservation of historic wooden buildings it is necessary to understand the characteristics of their exterior lacquer coating. The adhesion strength and the stability of specimens of the lacquer coating were measured by means of a vertical tension test. The specimens were prepared by five specialists in lacquer coating, according to a specified procedure. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Adhesion strength and the stability of the lacquer coating are greatly dependent on the person who made it. 2) However, the weakest and the next weakest layers are always the nuno-gise (cloth) and urushi-shitaji (foundation), without exception in all the specimens. Ways for improving these two weak points in lacquer coating are discussed. See also AATA 21-1669 for English translation.
