The Museum of Pre- and Early History in Frankfurt/Main, since its re-erection in 1952, has devoted most of its vigor to diggings within the heart of the old city; and since 1957 to include the suburbs and surroundings. Due to tremendous construction projects, the museum must rely on the support of interested laymen for small findings. Large scale construction not only unearths, but also destroys these monuments from antiquity, the only source for the largest cultural knowledge in the history of mankind, to include in the Frankfurt area up to the birth of Christ. Ground monuments are differentiated by visible and invisible ones. In turn, they are subdivided into movable and immovable ones. The movable ones end up in museums. Laws for the care of ground monuments are made by the individual German states, not by the federal republic, and differ from state to state. The area of the city of Frankfurt in the state of Hessen is important for findings from Roman times. Securing finds and diggings have their own technique. Large construction machines unearth large amounts of antiquities but also destroy or recover them again. Very close observations by individuals are of the utmost importance. Findings should not be handled, but carefully watched until museum experts arrive to make the necessary sketchings, photos, labeling and cleaning--as well as removing them to the museum, depending on size.
