The exfoliation and transfer on to a new base of later paintings is an important objective in the restoration of paintings. Ordinarily, when cleaning the original painting, later paintings over it have to be destroyed. The elaborate technique of exfoliation makes it possible to separate and conserve artistically valuable overpaintings with the original painting fully revealed. In the past, works on exfoliating overpaintings succeeded only on icons. The author of the paper elaborated in 1978-80 techniques of exfoliating oil overpaintings from the earlier fresco painting in oil.
