Abstract
A mathematical analysis carried out recently by us shows that unless the instrumental resolution is sufficiently good, the measured Auger derivative spectrum does not represent accurately the atomic concentrations in the sample under study. At the same time, the analysis provides the means for overcoming this difficulty even when the resolution is quite poor. A universal relation was presented whereby the experimentally measured derivative spectrum can be corrected so as to enable one to derive quite accurately the relative atomic concentrations. So much so, provided reliable Auger sensitivities of the elements are available. Unfortunately, however, most of the sensitivity data, especially for the high-energy Auger lines, were measured with insufficient resolution. In fact, we have shown that at least in some cases the published data are in error by a factor of over two. We believe that larger errors should be encountered, particularly for elements with high-energy Auger lines. It is our contention, therefore, that there is a need for a revision of the sensitivity data with the required resolution if they are to be used for quantification. The aim of the proposed investigations is to embark on such a revision.
