Abstract
Experiments were carried out under controlled laboratory conditions to investigate the feasibility of removing the air pollutants ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, formaldehyde, and hydrogen sulfide from museum display cases using sorbents. Active and passive mode tests were used on a variety of pollutant concentrations. Sorbents that failed to remove one or more pollutants in the active mode included silica gel, Purafil, and molecular sieves 13X. Experiments in the passive mode focused on activated carbon, the most cost effective sorbent. Loss rates increased with sorbent bed areas, and were typically an order of magnitude greater than loss to Teflon or plexiglass display case walls. It is strongly recommended that the very cost-effective use of activated carbon as a sorbent be adopted as a mitigation measure aimed at minimizing museum collection damange from air pollutants. Active mode devices could be used for initial purging of a severely contaminated display case, in cases containing materials which give off large amounts of pollutants, and in cases that have high exchange with heavily polluted outside air. Passive mode devices - trays containing activated carbon - are simple, but bed size and placement should be considered carefully. A number of pollutants were not included in this study, and should be investigated in the future.
