Abstract
This paper reports the results of neutron activation analysis of obsidian from Central Turkey. Detailed descriptions are provided of geological context of 6 localities from which raw obsidian samples were obtained. Variation in the quality and appearance of the obsidian was noted. Extensive workshop sites adjacent to four of the localities were also observed. Areas not inspected but which are likely to contain obsidian flows based on their geology are noted. The technique of neutron activation analysis used to analyze the source specimens is described briefly, with attention given to justifying the choice of elements. Na and Mn concentrations differentiate between some sources, but a larger suite of elements had to be determined for many distinctions. Problems with the instrumentation are noted. The result are in agreement with the results of Renfrew and his colleagues, who had previously analyzed obsidian from the same sources by optical spectrography. Some new data are provided on the distribution of obsidian from the Central Anatolian sources. One source, Çiftlik, was by far the dominant source used to supply the Levant.
