Abstract
Describes the printmaking technique used in 17th century * 2penschilderijen* 1 (pen-paintings or grisailles) for illustration of ships and sea battles. Discusses a recently restored panel by Sillemans, <i>Dutch Ships and Boats near a Harbor</i>, 1652 (private collection), that reveals the early use of this technique. Technical examination shows that the work was executed by an offset printing process and ink applied with pen and brush. -- AATA
