Abstract
The mosaic pavements of San Vitale, Ravenna, are examined. Their restoration history, the analysis of extant remains, and a comparative study of available archival documentation are combined to illustrate the change in attitude towards restoration criteria over the span of centuries. The first part of the text covers the restoration works executed between 1911 and 1932 and recapitulative comments describe the replacements with reused elements, reintegrations with neutral-toned tesserae and other design decisions involving managing subsidence and water infiltration carried out in the present time, by numbered areas of the ambulatory and in chronological order. -- AATA
