Abstract
Presents results of technical analyses of <i>The Forge of Vulcan* 1 by Velazquez in the Prado, Madrid. Notes changes in the composition revealed by x-rays, and discusses the composition of the painted surface. Suggests that the painting was unfinished when Velazquez returned from Rome in 1631 and that he worked on it until it was sold in 1634. Finally, compares theory and practice of painting in 17th-century Spain, checking the writings of Carducho, Pacheco and Palomino against samples taken from this and other contemporary paintings.
