Abstract
Catalogues 115 boxes from European and American collections; sees them as vibrant representatives of Cinquecento culture and its craving for objects all'antica. Their ornamentation consists of historiated scenes -- usually heroic or amorous episodes drawn from mythology or Roman history -- and a wealth of classical motifs formed from elements shaped out of a hard white substance and set on punched gold grounds. Attributes them to seven workshops, and analyzes materials, methods of production, and relation to prints by and after Mantegna, Mocetto, Montagna, and others, and also to small bronzes. Evidence which includes patronage, points to Venice as likely place of manufacture with a date of ca. 1510-1540. A descriptive entry for each casket includes history and bibliography. -- AATA
