Reduction in forming-fabric life frequently occurs with the change to alkaline papermaking. A method of testing fillers, such as calcium carbonates, for abrasiveness toward fabrics uses the Valley clay abrasion tester. Particle size, retention, and filler quantity are considerations. The number and quality of machine surfaces are also important with respect to fabric wear when fillers are used. -- AATA
