Abstract
The three major types of vegetable adhesives used by the mounter of Japanese paintings are wheat starch paste, seaweed paste, and konnyaku paste (made from the tuber of Amorphophallus konjac). Wheat starch paste is used for the lining and assembling of scrolls. In its aged form, it has an anti-fungal effect. Seaweed paste is used for sizing, gilding, and paper repair. konnyaku is used for strengthening and hardening paper. Masuda describes the process by which each adhesive is produced as well as the uses to which it is put. See also AATA 21-1334 for reference to entire proceedings.
