Abstract
Summarizes the types of investigations and questions a forensic scientist can answer regarding paper. The questions are what is the source of the paper, what is the date of manufacture, and is a given sample authentic. The authenticity is easier to prove from small samples than either the date or source. What you can learn from eye examination, as well as from various analytical methods and behavior tests, is discussed. A video is available from the Institute of Paper Chemistry. The article concludes with six case studies, one of which is titled, Counterfeit Painting. The forgery is proved with the date of the pulping technique. -- AATA
