This is a report of the results of gravimetric analyses of ten early dirhems, all of which were duplicates from the collection of the American Numismatic Society. Eight of the coins were issued at various mints under the Umayyad caliphs, and two were a little later. The silver content of all these coins was very high, the average being over 95%. The chief alloying element was copper, but appreciable proportions of gold, tin, lead, and iron were present. A rather close correlation was found between the specific gravities of the electrolytically cleaned coins and their silver content. These are the first analyses of early dirhems. -- AATA
