This paper describes a computer system which has been developed and used to record a large number of early Anglo-Saxon burials. It uses a new form of data compression in order to achieve substantial savings in storage requirement with minimal overheads, and an extremely flexible form of data input. Portability of the system was considered to be of importance for archaeological use, and the system has been written in a standard language enabling it to be transferred successfully between mainframe machines and microcomputers.
