Abstract
Silicon carbide is a relatively new material in the history of ceramics. This paper reviews the innovations in SiC refractories from 1890 to date. These developments began with the first oxide- bonded products and have continued to the dense, high-strength, high-performance materials of today. Some speculations are made on possible future innovations as well.
