Abstract
One of the first high-tech ceramics was the aluminum oxide spark plug insulator. This insulator played a key role in the successful introduction of aircraft and automotive high-compression internal combustion engines throughout the world. The development of the aluminum oxide insulator and its processing are traced from its early conception to the present time.
