Abstract
The usefulness of supplementing visual examination with neutron activation analysis (NAA), and advanced pattern recognition methods in provenance studies of pottery is demonstrated by a study of a small museum collection of Roman terra sigillata. Out of 117 sherds assigned by traditional typological methods to the early imperial period and Italian production sites, 36 sherds with Gellius, anepigraphic, or unknown stamps were selected for NAA. Advanced pattern recognition methods were employed to group sherds on the basis of the multielemental data, producing 3 Arretine classes, 1 North Italian class, and 2 classes of probable Central Italian origin. Sixteen previously unassigned sherds fall into these classes. -- AATA
