Results of a preliminary study of exposed panels by ESCA and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy (FT-IR) show that these techniques provide valuable information and insight into the earliest manifestations of weathering. This evidence is particularly significant since conventional dispersive infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopes and profilometry were unable to provide any indication of early signs of weathering. This detection is only pos sible because the sensitivity of ESCA and FT-IR over conventional methods and techniques is enhanced. -- AATA
