Suggests standards for storage of research library materials, based on storage separate from human work areas: 60°F., ± 5°; 50% RH with ± 3% diurnally and ± 6% seasonal tolerances; approximately 95% air filtration efficiency against sulfur dioxide, oxidants, and particulate matter; venti lation to prevent pockets of stagnant air; lighting as low as possible, with any fluorescent lights covered with UV filtering shields; a maximum of thirty days for exhibit of any materials, with exhibit light sources outside the cases and adequate ventilation of the cases; smooth shelving and bookends, and adequate space for flat shelving of oversized volumes; fire detection and alarm systems; water and steam piping kept out of book storage areas; and thorough, utilized monitoring systems.
