Before discussing the restoration of a Chinese lacquerwork screen from the Kangxi period, the author provides a short explanation of the properties of lacquer and a brief history of lacquerwork in China. The screen had been previously restored four times -- once with lacquer and three times with incompatible Western materials. During the author's restoration (which is illustrated in color photographs), the Western materials were removed. -- AATA
