Abstract
The heidatsu and hyomon techniques both involve the application of metal foils to an <irushi surface. Pieces made with one technique appear so similar to those made with the other technique that some believe the two are actually one technique and the difference semantic. Both terms are found in lists of treasures from the Shosoin. Discusses various opinions, 1901-1975, on how the techniques differ. -- AATA
