Abstract
Trace element data are reported for six different samples from the casting core of the bronze statue Jüngling vom Magdalensberg. The trace element analyses reported here have been made using instrumental neutron activation analysis for 32 elements. The geochemical interpretation of the data permits the conclusion that the samples are rather typical sedimentary rocks, with normal upper crustal trace element ratios. This is especially evident in the chondrite normalized rare earth element patterns (REE patterns), which are very similar to recent (post-Archean) sediments. No basaltic or other volcanic rock have been used for the casting core. No sediments of marine genesis (like several limestone varieties also present in the Alpine environment) have been used, since the typical Cerium anomaly is not present in the core samples. The presence of certain minerals like garnet or zircon, which are usually found in sedimentary rocks seems to be responsible for the pronounced Europium anomaly. Geochemical comparisons favour materials like orthoquartzites, shales, and loess as possible sources for the casting core material.
