Apart from historical monuments, many municipalities must also maintain a large quantity of public monuments in squares and parks. The funds needed for their care and rehabilitation must come from budgets already hard pressed to fund public works. Thus, only where serious defects threaten collapse are remedial efforts undertaken and then only by the cheapest industrial techniques. This is illustrated in detail by the sequence of steps in restoring the <i>Orpheus</i> group, a bronze sculpture by Carl Milles, in Stockholm. The original steel support (partly cast in place within the bronze) had corroded due to galvanic action. The sculpture was demounted and then taken apart. Some parts had to be cut open, and casting sand removed. Stainless steel (type SAF 2205) was used for the new reinforcements, and the reassembly was done using bronze welding in an argon atmosphere. The patina was adjusted by oxidation and the final coating was alkyl alkoxysilane with teflon suspension and organic pigments in the outer layers.
