Abstract
The physical, morphological and chemical properties of Ailanthus excelsa and Cupressus lusitanica were examined for their suitability for pulping. The basic density of 314 and 446 kg.m<sup>-3</sup>, the mean fiber length of 1. 28 and 2.45 mm, the fiber diameter of 28 and 32 mu, the lumen diameter of 19. 5 and 26 mu, the cell wall thickness of 4mu and the corresponding morphological indices for Ailanthus and Cupressus, respectively, indicated their pulping potentialities for paper, with satisfactory strength properties. The anatomical structure is expected to facilitate impregnation. The chemical composition is typical for tropical woods with higher ash and soluble in water and 1per thousand NaOH and is near to the one for temperate hardwoods used for pulping; hence, good yields of pulp are expected.
