Proposes the use of chemical solubility tests to distinguish Oriental lacquer, i.e., <irushi</i> which is soluble only in nitric acid, from European imitations. Provides a table of surface coatings and their solvents as well as conclusions about the compositions of five lacquerwork pieces in the J.
